From Boys to Men

From Boys to Men

From as far back as time the concept of rites of passage has always been part of ancient and modern societies. Each society or culture has their own trial, these tries are usually based on the type of tribe or culture the individual belongs to. A farming tribe for example may have a trial dealing with the production and cultivation of crops, where as a warrior tribe may have the individual go on a quest or fight to earn their respect and status amongst their respective communities, some culture uses mutilation of the boy or girl’s genitalia, these cultures not only the boys is circumcised but the girl as well, as inhumane we may find these actions but when a person is brought up in this types. For many of these cultures honor and respect within their tribe means everything, to earn that respect they even give up their own life to achieve such a distinguish honor not only for themselves but for their families as well.

Teaching is another way of passing along traditions and history of the culture to the new generations, teaching is instructing giving guidance rather than cohesions. The instructors would show the students and making sure they understand why they are going through the events they are about to go through and why it is necessary for them to do so. Understanding why something is taking place and the history behind it builds a greater understanding and excitement rather than fear, these pupils will be better prepared, we often fear the unknown but through teaching and learning the unknown is no more.

Teaching is the most valuable method, because only through teaching we can better preserve our society and pass on to the next generation to preservation of culture, ethic and belief is a way of ensuring the culture would be preserved accurately. Previous generations pass on their achievements, failures and battles, these stories are then passed along with accuracy throughout the years and decades without any misrepresantations or mistakes. The new generation also have their own stories to tell and improvements that they’ve made for their lives, these are also becoming part of the history of the tribes and will become part of the culture, it may seem that each generation are trying to do better than the previous one, but this is the only way of ensuring evolution and not repeating the mistakes of previous generations, only through teaching is this possible.
