Loving who I am

The media has always portrayed the Haitians as leapers social and economical outcasts, I am not sure why but if they only knew the rich history my country possesses they would not even dare to do so. Haiti was the first freed Black Country ever and even to this day we are paying the price for overthrowing napoleon army, at the time napoleon was a conqueror of many countries and he was defeated by a bunch of slaves. Being thought this growing up as a child my heart was filled with pride, to know how we have contributed to the black society. I always been proud of my heritage and my culture, I never once been ashamed of whom I was, even when it was not so cool to be Haitian and some places even dangerous, I never denied my people. I never believed the media’s portrayal of my country, a lot of people would ask questions about my culture, people who asks me questions I’m more incline to answer their questions, because it shows that they have a legitimate and genuine interest in learning about my culture.

Being a woman in the Haitian society I was brought up with the teaching that I need to find a husband that was wealthy and have a high standing in society. Because Haiti has a class society, that we have to marry to a person that is in the same class as you or higher never lower, if that was to happen you would bring shame to your family and that husband will never be welcome. As a woman in a Haitian society it is expected to only cook, take care of the home, the children, pretty much we have to keep a low profile and not be involved in anything intellectual and cater to your husband from head to toe.

Growing up in a religious family sex was pretty much a taboo subject. I was thought we were to wait till marriage, I totally believed that and I waited till I got married to engage in sexual experiences, the first and only sexual partner I’ve ever had is my husband, my husband and I both shared this experience together, we were each other’s first and only sexual partners. Now days young people are starting to have sex so early, it’s a very serious situation this is the reason why there’s a lot of young parents under the age of 16 which is very scary situation.
